  • Regular eating, regular sleeping, and regular working - these are the secrets to a man's sound health that accounts for the prosperity of a nation too.The ancient Gauls ( Celtic tribes who lived in ancient times to the area of Western Europe were named thus by the Romans ) were a very brave, strong race and were known for their abstemious living. Their food was milk, berries and herbs. They made bread of nuts. They had a very peculiar fashion of wearing a metal ring around their body, the size of which was regulated by act of Parliament. Any man who outgrow in circumference of his metal ring was looked upon as a lazy glutton, and consequently was disgraced.
  • Robert Collyer once remarked, " One great reason why I never had a really sick day in my life was that as boy I lived on oatmeal and milk, and brown bread, potatoes and a bit of meat when I could get it, and then oatmeal again."
  • Sir Isaac Newton, when writing his work ' Principia ', lived wholly upon a vegetable diet.
  • John Jacques Rousseau also advocated vegetarian diet. He said, ' The animals you eat are not those who devour others. You do not eat the carnivorous beasts, you take them as your pattern. You only hunger after sweet and gentle creatures who harm no one, which follow you, serve you and are devoured by you as the reward of their service .'
